► The Chaplaincy

Chaplaincy
Embracing Diversity, Celebrating Faith

The first few weeks of University life are an exciting and emotional time. You are moving into your new room, unpacking, saying goodbye to your family and your old lifestyle, and taking your first steps into the new University lifestyle. You will be bombarded with information about the University and your courses, all kinds of groups you might like to join, and various aspects of community life.

Among all this will be information about the Chaplaincy. You may think "This has nothing to with me because I'm not religious". Or you may be of another faith and assume the Chaplaincy is only for Christians. Well, think again!

The University of Glamorgan Chaplaincy is an open and inclusive one. As our motto implies, we rejoice in the fact that people come in all shapes, sizes and types. We respect everyone's faith, and we respect the thinking and exploration of those who are not committed to a faith. The Chaplaincy is a friendly, welcoming place, a place to meet people, to reflect, to discuss.

At present there is one full-time Chaplain, Vaughan Rees, three associate Chaplains, Ray Vincent, Rosa Hunt, and Gareth Leyshon (Roman Catholic), and Jan Harris who is a volunteer part time Chaplaincy administrator. They are based at the Meeting House on the Treforest Campus and at the Tramsheds building on the Glyntaff campus. You will also see them in all sorts of places around the campuses. Feel free to make yourself known to them. The Chaplaincy team is also supported by a number of faith advisers who help us serve the needs of people of all faiths and none.

The Meeting House is the Chaplaincy’s base on the Treforest Campus, on the north side of the campus just uphill from the Ferndale Building and the Brook Street gate. At the Meeting House we offer the Welsh tradition of warmth, hospitality and welcome to the whole University community. It is a place where people of all nationalities, cultures, faiths and ways of life can simply meet one another. Take a look here: chaplaincy.glam.ac.uk/meetinghouse/

The Chaplaincy Room on the first floor of the Tramsheds building on the Glyntaf Campus is open Monday to Friday during term from 8 am to 5pm (or other times by arrangement with the Chaplain) for anyone who wishes to go and pray, meditate or just sit quietly.

To find out more about Chaplaincy services, call in at the Meeting House (near the Brook Street gate), or send an e-mail to: chaplaincy@glam.ac.uk. Or just send an e-mail to let us know you are here and would like to be kept informed about Chaplaincy activities. If you are a Facebook user, we have a student group called “Chaplaincy@Uni.Glam”. You can join it to keep in touch and to know about our events. Or you can keep in touch through visiting our blog, http://chaplaincy.blogs.glam.ac.uk/

The early days of University life can sometimes be stressful too. The Chaplain and his volunteers are always available for help or advice, or just to listen. Whatever the problem, you will not be judged or preached at, and whatever you say will be treated as completely confidential. So if you need someone to talk to, however small or silly you may think the problem is, don't hesitate. With or without a problem, you are welcome to drop into the Chaplaincy whenever it's open just for a cup of coffee and a chat.

We hope your time in the University of Glamorgan will be very successful and happy.
