Mental Wellbeing and Student Life

Going to University can be an exciting experience but sometimes it can be difficult. You may feel homesick, be worried about money, find the pressure of study to much, or worry that you are not fitting in. These feelings are very common and usually subside as you begin to settle more into University life.

However sometimes, these feelings can become overwhelming and develop into depression or other types of mental health problems. If you feel like this, it is a good idea to seek help as soon as possible.

If you feel you need help to maintain your mental health or help yourself feel better, there are lots of things you can do:-

  • Keep in touch with family and / or friends
  • Make time to do things you enjoy
  • Look after yourself through good diet and exercise
  • Talk to people you trust

The University’s Mental Wellbeing Advisers can help with a range of issues. They are experienced mental health professionals and can:-

  • Provide advice, support and information, including sources of help, funding, benefits and useful services
  • Help you talk through your difficulties
  • Ensure that you have appropriate admission arrangements, facilities and study support during the whole of your time at university
  • Refer you to the counselling service if appropriate
  • Co-ordinate a support network between the university and other services
  • Liaise with Halls and Faculties on your behalf
  • Support you if you need to take a break from studies
  • Talk to other staff to improve their understanding of mental health problems, how you may be affected and what type of support is required
  • Work with individuals on issues that commonly arise, such as:

    • Anxiety problems and panic attacks
    • Problems with motivation or procrastination
    • Difficulties with concentration, organisation, or time-management
    • Avoidance and isolation from friends, family, others
    • Perfectionism and/or constant worry
    • Low self-esteem
    • Sleep problems or unhealthy eating patterns
    • Self-harm or suicidal thoughts.
