The Disability & Dyslexia Service
The Disability & Dyslexia service is part of Student Services and is based in F block, although all enquiries need to go through our reception area in C block.
Did you know? That students who have a disability or long-term illness that impacts on their higher education studies can access extra facilities at the University to support them; these facilities are co-ordinated by the Disability and Dyslexia Service which is part of Student Services.
Application
Whether you applied to the University through UCAS, clearing or by direct application, you should have been given the opportunity to let us know if you have a disability. If you told us that you do, a member of the Disability and Dyslexia Service should have contacted you, and provided information in an appropriate format about the services available to you, with a request to ask you to provide details of your disability. You may have also been invited to meet with a Disability Advisor to discuss your support needs before the start of your course.
If you identified on your application form that you have a disability when you applied and you didn’t receive a letter from the Disability and Dyslexia Service, you can contact us by telephoning 01443 482080 or visiting the Student Services reception.

Disability Advisors
You may have met with a Disability Advisor before beginning your course. If not, you should make an appointment at the Student Services reception as soon as you enrol or as soon as you develop a disability or illness that affects your ability to study. Your Advisor will help to assess your support needs and can arrange for immediate help if you need it. They will also advise you about what evidence you should provide to demonstrate that you need support.
Students from the UK who are registered with a Local Education Authority or have an NHS Student Award can usually apply for a Disabled Student’s Allowance to pay for personal assistance and equipment to support their studies. If you are eligible for this allowance, your Advisor will help you to apply; if not, they will tell you about other sources of support.
Evidence of your disability
It is important that you collect and bring in whatever evidence of your disability or illness that your Disability Advisor requests. This evidence will be used to assess your support needs, and will vary depending on your disability or illness. If you are eligible for a Disabled Student’s Allowance, the evidence will also be used as part of your application.
Needs assessments
All students who make a successful application for a Disabled Student’s Allowance must have a second, informal assessment before they can receive funding. This is called a needs assessment and is paid for by your Local Education Authority or NHS funding body. Assessment takes about two hours and explores your approaches to learning alongside the requirements of your course, so that you can be allocated support that best matches your needs.
A few weeks after your needs assessment appointment you will be sent a report to check and approve. You must approve the contents of the report and then send it back.
