A Welcome from Resident and Welfare Tutors Team to Residents in Halls

On behalf of the Resident and Welfare Tutors, I would like to welcome you to your Halls of Residence, whether it is based on the Treforest Campus or in Cardiff, which will be your home for the next academic year. For those of you moving into halls this may be your first experience of many things. It  may be your first time living away from home, or living in a community of students from all over the world. You have the opportunity to make friendships, which, for many of you will be life long. The Resident and Welfare Tutors will do their utmost to ensure that your experience of living in halls and of university life is as enjoyable as possible.

Resident and Welfare Tutors report to the head of Student Services. The Resident Tutors in the Treforest campus are responsible for the welfare and discipline of resident students, whereas the Welfare Tutors based in Cardiff are responsible for the pastoral care of resident students. The names and locations of your Resident and Welfare Tutors, and how to contact them are displayed in your kitchen. The Resident and Welfare Tutors work alongside a dedicated team of accommodation and hospitality staff  to ensure that Halls offer acceptable living surroundings for all resident students.

You have the opportunity of meeting your Resident/Welfare Tutor at your Halls Induction meeting. It is important that you attend, as we will be talking to you about a whole range of topics relating to your stay in Halls. During the first two weeks of your stay in Halls you will be visited by your Resident/Welfare Tutors to welcome you to Halls and answer any of your questions.

Again we  welcome you to the University and trust that you will have an enjoyable time living as part of the Halls Community.

Private Accommodation

Your accommodation is vital to your enjoyment of the University life both social and academic. Accommodation Services aim to assist students in finding good quality accommodation the local area. The majority of students find accommodation within a one mile radius of the University Campus's.

We make sure that properties registered with the University are of an acceptable standard and which, as a minimum, comply with the local authority's standards and safety regulations.

You can find up to date lists of private sector accommodation from house shares to lodgings (living with a resident landlord or family) at:
www.glamorganstudentpad.co.uk

Once you have registered your details, you will receive updates on new properties. You can find a flatmate from the flatmate message boards and get the low-down on contracts, deposits and other advice.

If you choose this option, we recommend that you visit the area and look at several properties before making a commitment.

Checklist for getting the right place:

  • Look around the property and area – think about safety e.g. is the area well lit? What will it be like at night?
  • Check out the facilities – is it close to local shops, bus stop, train station etc.
  • Find out about property – Check what condition it is in – are repairs needed? Does it smell damp? Would the landlord be willing to do repairs before you move in?
  • Ask about heating – What kind of heating is there? How much will the bills cost?
  • Think about security – How do the windows and doors lock? Are the exterior fences and walls secured?
  • Does it have everything you need? – Furniture, a phone line, appliances such as a washing machine?
  • Work out the total cost – Are there any additional expenses?
  • How mush is the deposit?
  • Double check the rent details – How much is it and when is it due?
