Union Membership
The only way to access all the services provided by the Union is to become the proud owner of a Union Membership Card, also known as an NUS card. To do this, you need to fill out the ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM and then bring your University enrolment card and two photographs to the Union Reception where your card will be issued on the spot (depending which option you go for.) Union cards can be obtained from Reception between 8.30am and 8.00pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 6.00pm at the weekends.
PLEASE NOTE THAT DURING THE FIRST 2 WEEKS OF TERM, YOU CAN ONLY GET YOUR CARD FROM SHAFTS BETWEEN 9am AND 5pm.
Once you've got your card, the Union is your oyster. You can become a volunteer, join sports teams, clubs and societies, stand for and vote in elections, get welfare advice, have a drink or two and dance yourself dizzy.
If you plan on making the most of your time in the Union, carry it with you all the time and you'll never miss out.
OPTION ONE: NUS EXTRA
Brand new in 2006/2007, the NUS Extra card is a premium discount and membership card for students. Packed with offers and vouchers designed to save you money, the NUS 'Extra' Card helps you to make the most of student life!
Here at Glamorgan we are giving you something EXTRA again, not only will you have money saving offers nationally, but also here in your own Students Union. For those of you who were here last year, we are adding in The Pulse card to your Extra card, saving you money off food,drinks&stationary in the Union Outlets.
OPTION TWO: Democracy Card
The Democracy Card is a free card that holds no discounts. Your Democracy Card is your local student union membership card that can be used for access and or voting purposes and receiving campaign and other NUS information.
If you lose your NUS card, you will need to let us know as soon as possible so we can try to stop any fraudulent use of your card.
If you want to get a replacemebt NUS card, come to Reception with another passport photograph. We'll confirm your details and issue a new card. However, there is a replacement charge of £2.00 and If you're really unlucky and lose it again, then the replacement charge goes up by £2.00 each time.
OPTING OUT
Membership of the Students' Union is automatic and is represented by the Union card. If, however, you do not wish to be a member of the Union, it is your right to opt out.
Your intention to opt out must be notified to the Academic Registrar of the University within the first four weeks of the academic year. You will then receive an identification document, which you can use in place of your Union card to access Union services such as sport, societies, bars, entertainment, welfare and representation. You can't however, get involved with the democratic process of the Union-meetings, elections-and once you've decided to opt out, you can't change your mind during the academic year.
LOST NUS CARDS
If you lose your NUS card, you will need to let us know as soon as possible. That way, we can try and stop any fraudulent use of your card.
If you want to get a new NUS card, come to Reception with another passport photograph. We'll confirm your details and issue a new card. Unless you have a crime reference number, there is a replacement charge of £2.00.
GUEST MEMBERSHIP
If you'd like to bring friends or family to the Union then you can purchase temporary membership for them. Each night you can have up to two guests.
Just take your Union card and guest's details to Reception before 6.30pm, any day of the week and, for just £1, you can sign them in for the night.
When you bring your guest to the Union, they will have to have an additional form of identification with them, just to support the information on their guest membership card.
Also, your guest remains your responsibility for the whole time they are in the building, so make sure they're on their best behaviour!
LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP
Have you been a member and want more? If so then there is the option to invest in Lifetime Membership. Lifetime Membership of the Union is available to all past students of the University (and its' previous incarnations) and at the bargain price of just £15 it will allow you access to the building and its services for the rest of your life. To apply, please e-mail us or come along to the Union during office hours and ask at Reception.
