Spike Sheppard – Union Secretary

Hi, my name is Spike and I am running for the position of Union Secretary for 2008/09. As a mature student I believe that I can bring a lot of life and work experience to this position, enabling me to work closely with the other union representatives to give students the best union possible.

I am currently finishing my 3rd year as a history student and over the past three years have taken an active part in both university and union life: I am currently Chairperson for the history society, a role I have held for the past two years since forming the society. I also hold a minibus licence and have performed various tasks for the union from night buses home for all the people using the union at fresher’s time as well as transporting various sports teams around the country to sporting events.

I am highly aware of the de-centralised nature of the University of Glamorgan: Cardiff Atrium, Glyntaff and Merthyr College all fall under our umbrella and it is important that these areas are not ‘left out’ when union decisions are made.

One of my specific concerns is of violence and anti-social behaviour on campus and will actively pursue the furtherance of the union’s policy of instigating measures to counter these events.

Therefore, as well as the standard tasks required of the Secretary by the union I intend to make the following items of special interest if elected.

  • To ensure that ‘satellite’ institutions such as the Atrium and Glyntaff receive as much assistance as possible to allow them to still feel part of the main union organisation at the Treforest campus.
  • To ensure that standards of comfort, security and overall safety at the union and on campus are continued to be met and if needed to be strengthened to achieve this aim.
  • As a mature student and following the university’s policy of equal rights, I wish to make sure that the mature element of the university is not dissuaded from making use of all elements of union life. It is a fact that 30.9% of Glamorgan university students are aged 30 plus: that means nearly 1/3rd of the university are outside the ‘traditional’ boundaries of studenthood.[1]
  • To ensure that minibus services are maintained at the union.

These form the core of my aims, but are by no means an exhaustive list. If elected to this post I intend to work hard to ensure that the union reputation is maintained and that students can continue to gain the best quality events and facilities that can be offered by a university union.

I thank you in advance for your vote and assure you of my utmost commitment to your union and university.

lara1Lara Buck for
Union Secretary

About me

My name is Lara Buck and I’m running for the position of secretary. I am 20 years old and in my third year studying Drama with Media. I see myself as well organised, motivated and dedicated to making our Union even better.

Being a drama student I am confident with public speaking, which is essential for voicing your opinion, and ensuring your message is successfully presented to the right people, especially at committee meetings.

During my time here I’ve been heavily involved with Union activities. I’m a member of the cheerleading squad; I started in my first year and by second year had been elected to treasurer. This has given me a great position of responsibility and taught me many essential skills; successful organisation of people and groups, managing finances, liaising with the Union and external organisations and making sure everything runs smoothly. These are all qualities that I will be able to positively transfer if elected to help your Union work more efficiently.

 My Aims

Our Campuses: I believe that greater communication between every campus is extremely important! This will allow the Union to satisfy your needs no matter where you are located.

The Atrium: Having been a student at both the Trefforest campus and the Atrium I think it’s really important to help Atrium students feel more a part of this University. I consider myself to understand the need to make us all feel untied regardless of physical location. I wish to develop the communication paths between the two facilities to improve the academic and personal lives of both students and staff.

Glyntaff: I want to ensure the switch from Law to Forensic Science goes well with no problems and all students involved are well informed. I recognise the movement of many departments between Glyntaff and Trefforest could potentially affect many of your studies and I plan to do as much as I can to minimise these disruptions. You must be informed of changes regularly, where you can go for further information, who can help you, where your staff members are and all other information essential to the successful completion of your degree.

Union Council: I want to help the student body understand the need for this council and the importance of their attendance and participation so that together we are able to help you get what you want and need from your Union.

Leek: The magazine has undergone some very successful changes recently and I would like for these to continue to help the magazine carry on communicating important issues that will help you as a student.

Why Nelson?

I'm very approachable an open minded! If you elect me to be your next secretary I guarantee to take your opinions on board and do my best to exercise them!

 Aims and Objectives:

Union Council – I will do my best to advertise the council meetings and make students aware that they do have an opinion that is valued and counts!

We need more attendance at the Union Council meetings and I am aiming to achieve this so we can see proper changes through!

Leek – Help Leek with their current issues, and support a more regular

publication of Leek. Also, I want to try to bring RAG to liaise with Leek, in order to promote

charitable causes. Further, I think it’s important to let students know about future change of the

Union and Union Council matters, and Leek is a fabulous tool in achieving student

awareness!

Skint? – I will do my utmost best to make students aware of their right to a

contingency fund I will make them aware of any other financial help

available to them!

conduct a survey to find out what exactly studentswant from their

Students’ Union website and forum.

GTFM – Have you listened to GTFM? Most likely not! Let’s change it! Our Radio

station is a good way to promote events but also important issues

about Campus Security or Trefforest.

Other Campuses – I want to create awareness of things the Union has to offer and to make our

other campuses feel more involved with University and Union events and services!

I will try my best to involve them in the Union Council and make sure they have their say!
