Paul Tinworth
Applying for Assistant Editor of ‘Leek’

Who am I? It’s a question I often ponder myself at times, but let me try and summarise myself: I am a perfectionist undergraduate studying BA (Hons) Combined Studies. I have an obsession with photography, an interest in media design and marketing, and a horrifically right-wing approach to the use of the written English language.
I’ve seen Leek change, falter, and change again in the three years that I’ve been at Glamorgan and I think I can contribute something worthwhile to it this coming year.
What’s my vision for Leek next year, I hear you enthusiastically scream?
I’m for a visually attractive, yet informative, newspaper-magazine hybrid that reaches out not just to the Treforest campus, but to the ATRiuM and the often overlooked campus in Glyntaff. I commute between Treforest and the ATRiuM, so my intentions would be to raise awareness and organise things for Leek in Cardiff as well as take an active role in designing, proof-reading, and photographing for it.
I’m for freshers, mature students, and post-grads taking part next year to make Leek more representative of the student body. Leek has relied too heavily on students who seem ‘eligible’ to contribute based on the title of their degree because students in other faculties feel that they have no place writing in.
I’m for less of the celebrity nonsense, and more about student life, events hosted by the Glamorgan and Cardiff Student Unions, and information that affects our time studying at university. Who cares if someone from a television soap is in Wales? I want to hear more about societies, touring bands, or how the university and NUS intends to support or damage student opportunities in the future, regardless of how controversial it might be.
All in all, I’m for a regular, accessible student publication that people actually want to pick up and perhaps even read.
I’m confident I can help better Leek as an Assistant Editor not only through my enthusiasm, but also from my experience with working with the editorial team in the past year. I’d love to run for Editor, but there’s the fact I’ll be in my final year soon, so I don’t really want to neglect Leek in favour of doing some tedious dissertation that I’ll be kicking myself for choosing.
Please vote for me! (If you don’t, I might cry.)
