The University and Students' Union pride themselves on having a safe and friendly campus. The Union takes the personal safety of its students very seriously, and we would like to make you aware of ways to keep yourselves safe and prevent yourselves being in unwanted situations. We would also like to ask if anyone is ever involved in an incident, whether or not reported to the police, to please let one of the Trustee team know so that we can help prevent other students from being in the same situation. We would also like to make you aware that we have welfare officers within the Union who you can pop in to see, whilst the student services also offer a friendly and confidential counseling service.
We ask all students to be extra vigilant whilst walking in and around campus in the dark. Avoid shortcuts (such as tunnels or alleyways) and stick to well lit routes. Always walk confidently and briskly and do not stop to give directions. Carry a personal attack alarm in your hand (they are no use in your bag) and have your keys ready to get in.
This advice is for all students, it is not only female or vulnerable looking students who are targeted.
Think ahead - don't walk home alone late at night - arrange in advance to stay with a trusted friend or pre-book a taxi.
The Union offer free personal attack alarms across campus including; Union reception, Welfare Officer and Women's Officer's receptions, Student Services, Health Centre, Accommodation Lodge and Glyntaff Common Room.
Please remember to test your alarm every couple of months and replace the battery when the alarm begins to sound fainter. Always keep it with you and within easy access. DO NOT misuse your alarm. If they are misused people will stop reacting to them and one day they may save your life!!!
The Union runs a free minibus service every night of the week dropping you at your door after a night out in the Union. The service runs from around 10.30pm every evening and covers Ponty and the immediate area. One trip per night will go into Cardiff - set drop off points only!
The service gives priority to single women waiting for the bus.
If you have any problems regarding the service please contact the Women's & Equal Opportunities Officer.
