The Union houses three bars, Smiths, Shafts and Baa Bars, Together they accommodate all number of functions and events from sitting and relaxing with friends over a few drinks, to passing the time playing pool, to dancing the night away.
Smiths, named after John Smith, MP, serves the role of the traditional pub on campus. Open all day, every day it provides hot and cold food and drink, as well as alcoholic beverages and pub snacks. Smiths is furnished with cosy booths and more spacious seating areas; its atmosphere welcomes students in a large group staring the night off with a few drinks, or those just wanting a quick drink with course mates to kill time between lectures.
Baa Bars, located on the top floor of the Union, has been recently refurbished to offer chairs and tables as well as comfy sofas. Our new juke box has a massive catalogue of music for all moods, to be enjoyed in the relaxed atmosphere that Baa Bars offers. Most major sports fixtures are shown in Baa Bars on the large mounted plasma screens, turning it into the campus sports bar. Attached to Baa Bars is a balcony with a picturesque view across the Taff Valley, which can be enjoyed come rain or shine as it is sheltered. Baa Bars is also available for hire for birthdays or social events when it is not being used by the Union for events such as poker tournaments and wine and cheese evenings; its new PA and lighting system make it a perfect venue for all types of functions.
Shafts is the Union nightclub. It is named Shafts as a tribute to the area’s long mining heritage. Its built in lighting and sound system help to create the perfect night out. Shafts hosts theme nights such as Pirates, Beach parties, Toga nights, Commando, School Disco and Rocky Horror, to name but a few.
