Job Functions

POSITION TITLE:  President

RESPONSIBLE TO:  Student Council and Board of Trustees

SALARY:   Scale 1 Point 10/11. £16,275.51

TERM:    1st July 2010 – 30th June 2011  

HOURS:  35 per week - usual office hours are 8.30am until 4.30pm. However, flexibility is a necessity to meet the requirements of the position, which may include evening and weekend work. Time off in will be given in lieu of extra hours worked.

LOCATION: The position is based primarily in the Students’ Union building on the Treforest campus, but travel between sites may be necessary.

The President of the Students’ Union serves as the senior elected officer of the Union whose prime role is to represent the interests of all students studying at the University.

The President will automatically be Chair of the Union’s Board of Trustees and Chair of the Executive Committee.

As President you will be required to serve as the student member of the University Board of Governors and Academic Board. These Committees are the two most senior decision making bodies of the University and it is the role of the President to represent the views of students at these meetings

In addition to these, the President also serves on the following University Committees:       

  • Student Affairs
  • Health & Safety
  • Awards
  • Estates Strategy
  • Directorate Information & Systems Advisory Group
  • Student Lifecycle

The President is also expected to liaise regularly with the senior management of the University, taking forward relevant student issues and commenting on proposals made by the University on how these will impact on students.

The President will also be expected to attend and present reports to Student Council.

The President will also be expected to attend, on behalf of the Union, a number of conferences and attend a variety of other meetings during the year.




POSITION TITLE: 
 Vice President Student Support (VPSS)

RESPONSIBLE TO:  Student Council and Board of Trustees

LINE MANAGER:  President

SALARY:   Scale 1 Point 10/11. £16,275.51

TERM:    1st July 2010 – 30th June 2011  

HOURS:  35 per week - usual office hours are 8.30am until 4.30pm. However, flexibility is a necessity to meet the requirements of the position, which may include evening and weekend work. Time off in will be given in lieu of extra hours worked.

LOCATION: The position is based primarily in the Students’ Union building on the Treforest campus, but travel between sites may be necessary.

The prime role of this position is to ensure the provision of academic and welfare advice, support and representation to members of the Students’ Union which will include the organisation of appropriate campaigns, information events and publications

In providing this service, the Vice President Student Support will be required to serve on the following University Committees:

  • Academic Board
     
  • Quality Assurance Committee
  • Quality Enhancement Committee
  • Academic Infringements 
  • Academic Appeals
  • Financial Contingency Fund

The VPSS will have ultimate responsibility in ensuring that the systems for Student Voice Representatives and Course Representatives work effectively. 

The VPSS will offer a range of both education and welfare support and where required, represent students.

The VPSS will liaise, work with and support the work of the following Standing Committee Chairs:

  • Chair of the Womens’ Committee
  • Chair of SWD Committee
  • Chair of the Black Students’ Committee
  • Chair of the LGBT Students’ Committee

The VPSS will be a voting member of each of these committees. If the post of VPSS is held by a male student, their place on the Womens’ Committee will be taken by a female Executive Officer.

The VPSS will be a member of the Union’s Board of Trustees and will also be expected to attend and present reports to Student Council and Executive Committee
         
The VPSS will also be expected to attend, on behalf of the Union, a number of conferences and attend a variety of other meetings during the year.



POSITION TITLE:  Vice President Student Activities (VPSA)

RESPONSIBLE TO:  Student Council and Board of Trustees

LINE MANAGER:  President

SALARY:   Scale 1 Point 10/11. £16,275.51

TERM:    1st July 2010 – 30th June 2011  

HOURS:  35 per week - usual office hours are 8.30am until 4.30pm. However, flexibility is a necessity to meet the requirements of the position, which may include evening and weekend work. Time off in will be given in lieu of extra hours worked.

LOCATION: The position is based primarily in the Students’ Union building on the Treforest campus, but travel between sites may be necessary.

The prime role of this position is to ensure the provision, by the Union, of a Sports programme within BUCS for competitive sports, support other sports activities, support societies and those approved activities sponsored by the Union.

In providing this service, the Vice President Student Activities will be required to serve on the following University Committees:

  • Focus Sports
     
  • Glamorgan Sport

The VPSA will also be responsible for overseeing volunteer and fund raising activities of the Union.

The VPSA will liaise, work with and support the work of following Standing Committee Chairs:

  • Chair of the Sports Committee
  • Chair of Cultural Societies Committee
  • Chair of the Union Supported Activities Committee
  • Chair of the International Students’ Committee

The VPSA will be a voting member of each of these committees.

The VPSA will be a member of the Union’s Board of Trustees and will also be expected to attend and present reports to the Student Council and Executive Committee

The VPSA will also be expected to attend, on behalf of the Union, a number of conferences and attend a variety of other meetings during the year.



POSITION TITLE:  Vice President Communications (VPC)

RESPONSIBLE TO:  Student Council and Board of Trustees

LINE MANAGER:  President

SALARY:   Scale 1 Point 10/11. £16,275.51

TERM:    1st July 2010 – 30th June 2011  

HOURS:  35 per week - usual office hours are 8.30am until 4.30pm. However, flexibility is a necessity to meet the requirements of the position, which may include evening and weekend work. Time off in will be given in lieu of extra hours worked.

LOCATION: The position is based primarily in the Students’ Union building on the Treforest campus, but travel between sites may be necessary.

The prime role of this position is to ensure the adequate provision of student representation and the development of appropriate Union services based at Atrium, Glyntaf and, if required, Merthyr.

The VPC will liaise with the elected officers of Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama Students’ Union to develop mutually beneficial activities and services.

The VPC will be responsible for all aspects of Union communication including web site, newspaper, external media and the development of additional communication methods

In providing this service, the Vice President Communications will be required to serve on the following University Committees:
Portal Development Group

The VPC will liaise, work with and support the work of the following Standing Committee Chairs:

  • Chair of the Treforest Campus Committee
  • Chair of Glyntaf Campus Committee
  • Chair of the Atrium Campus Committee
  • Chair of the Mature Students’ Committee
  • Chair of the Postgraduate Students’ Committee
  • Chair of the Part Time Students’ Committee


The VPC will be a voting member of each of these committees.

The VPC will be a member of the Union’s Board of Trustees and will also be expected to attend and present reports to Student Council and Executive Committee.



TRUSTEE RESPONSIBILITIES

Additional Information

The President of the University of Glamorgan Union is also a member of the Board of Governors of the University of Glamorgan.

All Sabbatical Officers of the University of Glamorgan Union are Trustees of the Union.

All Sabbatical Officers have a legal responsibility as such to uphold all Health and Safety regulations, Health and Hygiene etc. of the Students’ Union

Elected Sabbatical Officers of the Union also sit on various committees of the University, which relate to their area of responsibility.

Elected Sabbatical Officers should be aware that they may be required to become a cheque signatory of the Union and, as such, may have a credit check made against them.

Elected Sabbatical Officers of the Union are not able to work for the Union during their term of office.

Elected Sabbatical Officers of the Union are not able to work for the Union until a period of three years following their term of office has elapsed.



POSITION TITLE:  Chair of Student Council

RESPONSIBLE TO:  Student Council and Board of Trustees

TERM:    1st July 2010 – 30th June 2011  

HOURS:  Flexibility will be a necessity to meet the requirements of the position and will include some evening work for attendance at meetings.

LOCATION: The position is based primarily in the Students’ Union building on the Treforest campus, but travel between sites may be necessary.


Student Council is the main (although subservient to General Meetings) decision and policy making body of the Students’ Union. It shall also:

  • Have the authority to represent the voice of the students.
  • Make, repeal and amend the Standing Orders
  • Receive a quarterly report from the Trustees
  • Receive reports from the Sabbatical Officers
  • Ratify the appointment of External and Alumni Trustees
  • Appoint, from within its number, councillors to sit on various Union committees
  • Appoint honorary life/associate members

The Chair of Student Council will be a non-voting position; the responsibilities of the post holder will be to:

  • Chair all meetings of Student Council
  • Liaise with and support the work of the members of Student Council
  • Aid in the promotion of the work of Student Council and democracy generally
  • The Chair of Student Council will also be a member of the Executive Committee.
