Mini Module
ED1U007 Personal Development Through Representation
Module Leader: Karen Fitzgibbon, Centre for Excellence in Learning & Teaching
This module has been designed to recognise the personal development that takes place when students act as representatives for their course. There are two assessments, both of which must be passed in order to pass the module overall. The module is validated for 5 credits at Level 4 (equivalent to undergraduate year 1), but can be taken by representatives in any year of their studies.
Assessment One - Evidence of role (40% weighting)
You are required to provide evidence of the extent of your role over the period of time you have been a student representative. It is necessary to provide a range of evidence in order to satisfy this element of the assessment. This could include:
• Confirmed attendance at meetings where student representatives make contribution to the student experience, such as:
• Scheme Board
• Staff Student Liaison Committee
• Teaching and Learning Committee
• other Faculty or University Committees (please give the title of the committee and the name of the Chair)
• NUS meetings
• Confirmation of your attendance can include your name on minutes of the meeting (it is only necessary to provide the list of names of those present rather than the whole set of minutes), or a list of the dates of the meetings you attended signed by the Scheme Leader, or Award Tutor or NUS Sabbatical Officer in the case of NUS meetings.
• Give a clear account of issues you raised at each meet and what response/action was taken
Assessment Two – SWOT analysis of the role (60% weighting)
You are required to produce a 1500 word SWOT analysis of your role, demonstrating the challenges the role presented and how you have overcome those challenges successfully. If you include specific cases where you have helped a student, please make sure you anonymise all the names associated with the case.
You should present your SWOT analysis as a reflective essay, detailing your personal strengths and weaknesses and showing how you used these qualities effectively, particularly how you overcame any weaknesses that you identify. You should then identify the opportunities that the role presented you with to practice (and therefore develop) those skills. Finally, you should give examples of any threats to the development of those skills. You are strongly advised to submit a draft of this assessment for guidance and feedback no later than 3 weeks before the deadline.
Assessment deadline: Please make sure you submit both assessments. Submission date is 11 May 2012. Assessments should be handed in to the Faculty of Business and Society Reception in Hirwaun (H block) on main campus. You will need to include the module code: ED1U007 on the assessment cover sheet. The administrator from the Faculty will then contact you to enrol you for the module. To receive your grade, you must complete the enrolment process.

Questions you may have about doing the module:
Can I do the module if I am a rep in halls of residence, not a course rep?
Yes, as long as you are able to meet the requirements of the module assessments there is no reason you shouldn’t attempt the module.
If I only get the chance to be a rep for a term can I still do the module?
Yes, as long as your time as a rep is sufficient to enable you to go to enough meetings, and complete the reflective essay detailing the challenges associated with the role, there is no reason you shouldn’t attempt the module.
Everyone else started in November, but I didn’t become a rep until after Christmas, can I still enroll for the module?
Yes, contact me and I will give you some advice about what you’ll need to do.
Does the credit count towards my qualification?
Not directly, no. The credits awarded are in addition to the credit requirements for successful completion of your studies. However, they will be an impressive addition to your CV and employers rate such activities very highly, particularly if you can articulate the challenges and benefits of such a role.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes, we will issue certificates to all students who complete the assessments to a pass standard.
I was a rep last year, but I’m not doing it now. Can I do the module?
Unfortunately not, the experience you have needs to be current and we can’t assess retrospective participation. You might want to think about taking on the role again now you can gain credit.
I’m not a first year student. Can I do the module and will I get the credits at my level of study?
All students currently fulfilling the role of student rep on a course at the University can take the module, whatever year of study or stage they are at. However, the module is only accredited at level four (first year undergraduate), so you will receive 4 level one credits, not 4 credits at your level of study.
