24/10/2011 - Climbing This Week!

As we have had a huge amount of people join the club already this Wednesday is going to be for paid members ONLY. We currently have 39 paid members, and are only okay for 40 people at the wall at one time.

The committee is meeting tonight to discuss what to do in the next week. The SU has been contacted and are doing some maths for us, and are helping with the problem.

So for this week, it will be paid members ONLY at the wall. If you were a member last year, and not paid this year, tuff. We will still be down the pub afterwards, as usual.

It might be worth seeing who has got cars, and if they want to drive up to the Summit Centre.

01/10/2011 - Trips and Events

31/10/2011 - Halloween Fancy Dress Bowling - Cardiff Bay

Right then people it's that time of the year again. That time when you actually have an excuse for looking horribly scary (Which some of you manage quite well all year round )

This year Halloween falls on a Monday, so I thought rather than just get drunk in Tref all dressed up like last year, lets go make fools of ourselves down Cardiff Bay with some fancy dress bowling.

So Monday 31st Oct, Cardiff Bay around 8pm (Otley drinks before hand of course) and then head off into Cardiff so we can really show off how grotesque we look.

I will be taking money for this on Wed 26th Oct and estimate it will be around £10 for 2 games of bowling each. The more that come however, the better chance I will have of securing a lower price.

01/11/2011 - Halloween!

Halloween has come around one again! After an amazing time last year we are repeating it but this time with a twist.

This year we are competing against Newport climbing club! But not in climbing of course, oh no! We are competing for the best fancy dress costume. As we did so well I can't imagine how we could possibly lose. But I want you all to make the best effort you can. (I have a pint riding on it!)

There has been a rule set by the Summit Centre, as the Centre will also be open to the public we are not allowed to wear anything too revealing. There was a complain made last year, and they nearly banned corsets!

We are currently trying to organise transport for 6:30pm from the SU.

12/11/2011 - First Aid Course

We are going to be running a first aid course on the 12/11/2011 and the 13/11/2011. It is a two day first aid course and is suitable for outdoor instructior awards (SPA, CWA, ML). The course will be based around the sort of activites we do as a club and is a REC2 (Rescue Emergency Care) certificate that will last three years. The price for this is usually £120 - £130, but we have got it for £85. Spaces are limited to 12 people.

If you are interested please contact me.  THIS EVENT IS NOW FULL!

09/12/2011 - North Wales - Christmas Trip

One again Christmas is close... well it will be in a few weeks. So we have our annual Christmas trip.

The plan is to go up on the 9th and come back on the 11th. We will arrive late on the 9th so we can find beer and have a good old pissup in the bunk house. Saturday and Sunday will we go out and find some climbing to do! It the weather doesn't allow it we will go into the Beacon Centre.

As I am sure lot of you understand the weather might not be ideal for any sort of outdoor climbing. But we can still go and play in the snow, just not at any altitude etc etc. The general idea of this trip is to relax before Christmas.

Price is yet to be set, it will depend on numbers. If you are interested please contact me. I need to know ruff numbers by the end of this month because we need to work out if a 30 bed or 46 bed bunkhouse would be better. We are joining up with Newport Climbing Club this year, to make it even bigger and better. You will need warm clothes and a sleeping bag. A kit list will be given out closer to the time.

15 Spaces have already been reserved for people who came to the bag pack. Also once again I will be cooking a cooked dinner on the Saturday night, with christmas crackers!

12/09/2011 - Freshers

Here is some basic information about the club and how to join. It costs £50 for the year (as advised by the SU), and everyone has to pay this (including committee). We appreciate that this is a lot, but you do get a lot for your money. For your money you get the following:

  1. Use of the climbing wall on Wednesday night between 6:30pm and 8:30pm for the first two terms (include our instructor)
  2. Plenty of kit to use (harnesses, helmets, belay plates, trad gear, rope etc etc)
  3. Insurance
  4. Associate membership of the BMC (http://www.thebmc.com)
  5. Discount in the Otley Arms on Wednesday Nights
  6. 15% Discount in Cotswold Outdoors (http://www.cotswoldoutdoors.com)
  7. Discounted entry into the Summit Centre on Club Trips
  8. Subsidized climbing trips

They are what you get for your money. We also have several anual trips such as:

  • Christmas Trip - North Wales
  • Easter Trip - Peak District (but can change)
  • Summer Trip - Pembrook (can also change)

Along with these week plus long trips we also run several random weekend trips throughout the year depending on the weather. The more involved in the club you make yourself the more you get back out of it. Along with climbing we are incredibly sociable as a club, and have several nights out a year. Our new social secretary Ollie plans on having more events, and more fun! If you look at our photos  here you can see pictures from our Halloween and Christmas socials.

If you would like some more information feel free to email me at josh.ovki@gmail.com I am accepting people showing interest at the moment, and if you want to put your name onto my list also drop me an email.

18/08/2011 - Missing News

Apologies for not updating this site for so long. I have been rather busy with university, work, and climbing! Much has happened since. The Easter trip went to the Peak District, and had an amazing time. With some camping, and lots of climbing. We also stayed in a bunk house which was very nice. Thanks go out to Chris Baggy for organising the bunk house. Pictures will be going up very soon, once I have finished my current list of things. The AGM has been and gone and a new committee has been nominated. The new committee is as follows:

President - Josh "Wally" Waller
Vice President - Tim "Timmy" Lee
Gear Secretary - Andy Sheild
Secretary - Liz Thomas
Treasurer - Emma Panton
Vice Treasurer - Jonny "Mousey" Hand
Social Secretary - Ollie Lancett

Congratulations to the new committee! With three returning committee members this year should be an even bigger success! We have introduced two extra position this year, Vice President and Vice Treasurer. The Vice President position was created to take some of the load off the president. It is an incredibly stressful job, and it is hard to do everything and your degree. So the vice is here to help the president. The Vice Treasurer position has been created because after a re-vote it was still 50/50 between the remaining two candidates. To keep an odd number of committee members it made sense to have them both.

It is freshers time again! If any freshers come across this and are interested in joining the climbing club drop me an email at: josh.ovki@gmail.com and I will give you any information needed.

2: Peak District - price £55
3: North Wales - price £60
4: South Of France - price ~£250 (ollies suggestion)

Deposits for the trip will be taken next Wednesday, if you don't pay the deposit you are not garenteed a place on the trip.
