Poets Corner
Fifth November
by Michelle Hayes
The fifth of November ablaze,
Crowds huddled behind the safety marker,
Barely seen through the smoky haze,
Children bundled drawing pretty pictures with each sparkler.
The bonfire burning brightly,
We're wrapped in layers - scarf, coat and glove,
The Catherine Wheel whirls violently,
And the fireworks burst and our faces are stuck looking above.
Most forget the history,
The symbolism of Guy Fawkes is lost,
Instead all we look at are the exuberant lights and fire show,
A gathering, a party, warm in the frost.
Remember, remember, the fifth of November.
